QUIET TIME WITH
GOD

One valuable form of quiet time is that time you spend with God.  Most people go into quiet time,
read their Bibles and pray because they think it is the right thing to do or they heard that other
people do it.  If that is the case, they will soon find themselves just going through the motions.

They read their Bible, shut it, and go on with the rest of their day, forgetting what they just
read.  Or they pray about things that are pressing on them, needing relief.  “This is the sign of a
mature Christian,” they think, yet they feel weak and ineffectual when a real attack comes into
their lives.

Just going through the motions and spending quiet time with God doesn't make you stronger.
Just because you take 5-10 minutes whenever you remember to doesn’t mean you suddenly
become Super Christian.  Nope, quiet time with God has to be more deliberate than that.

Find a quiet place in your home where no one will disturb you.  Take a notebook with you.  You
will use it to jot down things you want to do later so they don’t distract you but you also don’t
forget.  Usually when you are trying to have some quiet time that is when you remember
everything you need to do for the day.  You will also want to jot down any thoughts that come to
you.

Quiet time can be spent in prayer.  Prayer is conversation with God.  Sometimes Quiet Time is
just thanking God for how good He has been to you and yours.  You may have a petition or two,
asking God for wisdom or answers.  If you will take time to talk with Him THEN listen for His quiet,
gentle voice, He will talk to you.  It won’t necessarily be an audible voice but an “inner knowing”
inside – or you’ll hear it as a form of thought you know you didn’t think yourself.

Start your quiet time asking God to reveal His Word to you so you will always get something out
of what you are reading.  You can read a structured Bible reading program or just start in
Psalms and Proverbs.  The important this is to DO it.  It is also probably better to start your day
this way, not end it.  That way you give God a chance to prepare you for the day and what you
will be facing.

Atmosphere is important.  If you like candles, burn some for the scent and ambiance.  Make
sure the area is clutter free.  It will help you concentrate on what is important, not be
sidetracked by mess.  Be comfortable but if it is early morning, not TOO comfortable of you'll fall
asleep.

Think of this time as an unbreakable appointment with God, your Master, Creator, and the one
person who knows you best.  Don't reschedule - keep this appointment!

More later.
