In 1984, I looked into purchasing an FmHA home. I began the process for approval – credit check, title
search, the attorney’s fee for the search, and a year’s insurance available. The process could take up
and evicted me, telling me I had to 2 weeks to get out. She was angry that I wasn’t going to rent from
her anymore. I reminded her that legally she had to give me 30 days then went to pray.
I had the money to close on the FmHA house only because my parents had co-signed a loan at the
bank. Everywhere around me, people began telling me to take the money and get an apartment. I
was told I was being foolish to endanger Josh (my son) by not having a place to stay. People came
out of the woodwork to inform me I was not being wise in waiting for the house.
Thing is, if I got the apartment, I wouldn’t have my own home. So my answer every time was, “But God
told me to believe Him for my home.” I wasn’t saying it boldly and full of faith, but I was saying it. Inside
I was thinking, “God, what’s going on? YOU told me to believe for this house so I am going to believe
for this house no matter what. If I end up in the street, I’ll tell everyone You did this to me since YOU
told me to believe You.” (I told you I wasn’t full of bold faith and yes, I know better now.) God said to
me, “I have no Plan B. Stick with Plan A, what you are believing Me for.” I decided to stand my
ground.
By Monday November 26 “when nothing had happened yet,” I called the FmHA office to explain what
was going on to my caseworker. She told me that while it was rare, in the case of an emergency, it
was possible to move in a house before closing. The only catch was that the credit report and title
search had to be finished before then and she didn’t believe that was possible since it was only a week
before I had to be out of the rental house. Also, the contractors were still working on getting the house
ready for occupancy and had to be done before I could move in.
I went to God and simply said, “I have no Plan B. I believe You. I need a miracle.”
Tuesday, I received a phone call from my caseworker saying the credit report had come back already.
The lady was shocked (so was I). All that was left was the title search so she recommended I call the
attorney’s office. I did. The upshot of that was another miracle – the secretary decided to go to the
courthouse and do the search herself.
Wednesday, I was able to go by the attorney’s office and pay for the title search and give them the
proof of a year’s paid insurance. The contractors would be done Thursday. It was a go - EXCEPT
there was no water and electricity.
Thursday, I called the water and electric companies. The only way I could get either one turned on in
time was to go into their offices immediately and pay the deposit. Problem was the companies were on
opposite ends of town and it was almost closing time. I could go to one or the other, not both. After
prayerfully consulting with God, I went to the water company. They would not turn the electricity on
until Monday.
On Friday November 30, 1984, I moved into my very own home. The delivery man brought my washer
and dryer to the house late that afternoon and asked where my electricity was. When I explained, he
said, “Hold on a minute…” He went into the bedroom that had the circuit breaker box – flipped the
main switch – and ‘viola! I had electricity. He explained that sometimes when contractors were
finished, the utilities were not always turned off immediately (I later discovered it was scheduled to be
turned off Monday, another miracle).
It took several miracles to get me into my very first home - and those miracles changed my life and how
I looked at God and Plan B’s. I can boldly say, "Trust in God's Plan A!"
