WHO ARE YOU??

I can hear it now - "What's the matter with you, Nan?  I know who I am.  I am a mother, a wife, a divorcee, an
employee, a single woman, a.... (
fill in the blank)."

We so often define ourselves by WHAT we do instead of WHO we really are.  God calls us blessed.  He
calls us the apple of His eye.  He calls us important, valuable, precious.  That is the woman I am talking
about, the one God says you are.

Who are YOU?

I was thinking about this today when I dealt with a person who loves to treat me as if I am a precocious child
instead of an intelligent woman simply because I work from home.  That is an offshoot of being home for 6
years finishing up the raising of my son.  I got to be an at-home mom.  I learned very quickly that this mean
I lost all my brains overnight.

My former work friends began to act as if being out of the loop meant I was no longer a viable (smart)
human being.  It was a strange feeling.  Yet I was just as guilty of judging at-home mothers the same way -
not quite bright.  How dumb is that?

During my time raising my son, I had to learn who I really was because I fell prey to depression fits of "WHO
AM I?"  I felt unfulfilled and as if I no longer had anything to contribute to society.  One day my husband
said, "Do you believe God told you to come home and finish raising Josh?"  Of course I replied in the
affirmative so he continued, "Then you need to look at this time as your assignment from God and treat it
accordingly.  God apparently thought you had what it takes to do this job.  You need to go find out who He
says you are."

That was true - I had to learn to base my self-esteem on God's Word, not what the world said or how
people treated me.  I had to learn how much He loved me and how highly He thought of me.

No matter how qualified and able I might have been in the work force, once I came home, I lost my
confidence.  Without confidence I couldn't believe I was worth anything anymore.

I had to learn to appreciate who I am because only then can I truly feel good about ME.   By spending time
in the Word of God (Bible), I began to develop a self-esteem based on truth, not what others said or
thought about me.  The Bible is a mirror, reflecting God's image, character and beauty. The more you look
into God's Word the more your image, character and beauty begin to be based on God's image.

Be confident in His love for you. Know that you are accepted and you are able to do all things He called
you to do, through Christ.

I read this in a book, "Someone once said, 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.'  So the next time you look
into the mirror say, 'I'm absolutely beautiful in God's eyes and He loves me unconditionally!'"
